When should the premium pedestal be used?

The premium pedestal should be used where the Tap & Charge terminal needs a clear freestanding position. That is common in open car parks, destination sites and grouped charger layouts where a wall-mounted terminal would be hard to find or poorly placed. The terminal acts as a shared payment point, so its position should make sense to drivers approaching from each supported bay.

The pedestal is not the payment terminal itself. It is the mounting route for the terminal. The installer should therefore confirm the Tap & Charge terminal, pedestal and ground base together before ordering. If the terminal is being installed on the standard mounting post instead, the post route and plate requirement should be checked separately.

Planning the user route to payment

Tap & Charge can be used as a contactless payment option for multiple Rolec EV chargepoints. The pedestal should therefore be placed where users can identify the terminal after parking and reach it without crossing unnecessary cable routes. A terminal hidden behind parked vehicles can slow the payment process, while a terminal too close to traffic may need extra protection.

Rolec lists Tap & Charge as OCPP 1.6 compliant and compatible with Rolec EV chargepoints. The terminal communicates with the chosen back-office management system where tariffs are configured by the operator. The pedestal position should support that process by making socket or bay selection clear for drivers using the payment terminal.

Premium pedestal or mounting post?

Rolec lists two alternative installation options for Tap & Charge: the premium mounting pedestal and the EVFP0035 mounting post. Both are stated to conform with PAS 1899 on the Tap & Charge page. The choice depends on the site layout, the desired appearance and the mounting package selected by the installer.

Choose the premium pedestal where the payment terminal needs a dedicated freestanding presence and a more defined payment point. Choose the standard mounting post route where that support format better matches the charger group or where the site has already standardised on post accessories. Protecting the payment terminal position

A freestanding payment terminal can be exposed to vehicle movement in the same way as a chargepoint. The pedestal position should be checked against bay markings, kerbs, turning circles and pedestrian paths. Where impact risk is present, protection should be planned before the surface is completed.

For groundworks-led installations, a root mount EV chargepoint protection barrier can be considered. Where the surface is already finished, a surface mounted barrier may be more practical. The barrier must not block access to the terminal screen, payment area or service access.
