The Rolec Type B RCD/MCB EV Consumer Unit is a 20A single-phase consumer unit for compatible EV charger circuits.

EVIN0020 is the 20A single-phase Type B RCD/MCB version in the Rolec EV Consumer Units range. The manufacturer data sheet lists a 230VAC, 50Hz single-phase input, with a 20A 1P 6kA MCB and 63A 30mA 2P Type B RCD in a 4MOD enclosure. The Type B range is described for the installation of an EV charging point that has PME fault detection. Rolec’s wider EV consumer unit range also includes Type A RCBO units for chargers with DC protective devices, plus Type B 40A and three-phase variants. The enclosure is grey epoxy polyester powder coated steel, IP40 rated and IK10 impact resistant. Choose this model only where the charger specification and circuit design call for Type B RCD and MCB protection. For related products, see EV circuit protection.

When does the Type B unit fit?

The Type B range is listed for EV charging points that have PME fault detection. That distinguishes it from the Type A RCBO range, which the same data sheet describes for chargepoints with a DC protective device and PME fault detection. The correct choice depends on the charger’s verified protection features and the installation design.

EVIN0020 is the 20A single-phase option. It is aligned with a 16A EV charger circuit in the data sheet feature wording. Where the charger circuit is 32A single phase, EVIN0025 is the 40A Type B version. For three-phase circuits, the Type B range uses EVIN0080 and EVIN0085.

What protection is built in?

The verified product overview lists a 20A 1P 6kA MCB and a 63A 30mA 2P Type B RCD. The data sheet states that the consumer unit range distributes power and provides short circuit, overcurrent and earth leakage protection for EV chargepoint installations. Built-in overload and fault current protection is also listed as a product feature.

Protection still has to be designed around the actual site. The installer should check charger instructions, cable type, cable length, earthing arrangement and any surge protection requirement before selection. The Type B unit is a defined protection product, but it is not a complete design on its own.

Size, enclosure and installation checks

The 4MOD enclosure used for this Type B single-phase unit is listed at 126mm wide, 240mm high and 110mm deep. The enclosure material is epoxy polyester powder coated steel, with grey colour listed in the technical data. IP40 and IK10 ratings are verified for the consumer unit range.

The environmental data lists an operating temperature range of -25°C to +55°C. The enclosure should be installed in a location suitable for its IP40 rating. Cable entry, access for testing, labelling and future maintenance should be checked before mounting, especially where the EV circuit is being added to an existing property.

Choosing Type B variants

EVIN0020 is the 20A single-phase Type B RCD/MCB unit. EVIN0025 is the 40A single-phase Type B RCD/MCB unit. EVIN0080 is the 20A three-phase Type B RCD/MCB unit, and EVIN0085 is the 40A three-phase Type B RCD/MCB unit. The selection depends on current rating and phase.

The 20A and 40A single-phase Type B units use 4MOD enclosures. The three-phase Type B units use 8MOD enclosures and 400VAC, 50Hz input. If the charger has a DC protective device as well as PME fault detection, the Type A RCBO range should be reviewed before defaulting to Type B.

Type B consumer unit questions

What is EVIN0020 rated at?

EVIN0020 is listed as the 20A single-phase Type B RCD/MCB EV consumer unit. The data sheet specifies a 20A 1P 6kA MCB and a 63A 30mA 2P Type B RCD.

What is the 40A single-phase Type B version?

EVIN0025 is the 40A single-phase Type B RCD/MCB variant. It is selected where the design calls for a 40A single-phase EV consumer unit.

How is Type B different from Type A here?

The Rolec data sheet describes Type B units for EV charging points with PME fault detection. Type A RCBO units are described for EV charging points with a DC protective device and PME fault detection.
