The Rolec WallPod Smart 7.4kW 5m Tethered EV Charger is a grey single-phase wall or post-mounted chargepoint with one fixed Type 2 lead. ROLEC4140G provides up to 7.4kW charging from a 230V AC supply at 32A and is built for users who want the cable kept with the charger. It is a practical match for a driveway, garage wall, allocated residential bay or small workplace space where the vehicle inlet is normally within easy reach of a 5m cable. The grey finish gives a softer exterior appearance than black while keeping the same electrical specification as the white and black 5m tethered WallPod variants. Control can be kept simple through plug and charge, or managed through mobile app and RFID operation. OCPP 1.6J support, Class 1 MID compliant metering and 4G, Wi-Fi and Ethernet communications give the unit a route into managed charging where the site needs usage records or access control. When a 5m tethered WallPod fits the bay

A 5m tethered lead suits a predictable parking position. The driver does not need to unpack a separate cable, and the Type 2 connector is already matched to the charger. For a private driveway or allocated bay, that makes daily charging faster to start and easier to repeat. The supplied charge gun holster gives the connector a defined storage position, which helps keep the installation neater once the charging session is finished.

The 5m lead should be selected when the installer can place the charger close to the usual vehicle inlet. It keeps surplus cable lower than a 10m version and is easier to return to the holster. It is not the right answer for every layout. If the charge port position changes between vehicles, or the wall position sits further from the parking bay, the 10m tethered variant gives more reach. If users bring different cables to a shared site, the socketed WallPod gives more flexibility.

App, RFID and back-office operation

WallPod Smart supports plug and charge, mobile app and RFID operation, so the same hardware can serve private domestic use or controlled access sites. Plug and charge keeps a private home installation simple. RFID is useful where the unit is in a shared area and sessions should be started only by authorised users. Mobile app control supports users who want session visibility and remote operation through a compatible platform.

OCPP 1.6J support allows the charger to connect to a compatible chargepoint management system. That matters for small businesses, residential car parks and workplace charging where usage records, user control or tariff handling may be required. The integrated Class 1 MID compliant meter supports accurate energy reporting, which is important where the energy cost is not simply absorbed as a private household load. Connectivity is supported through 4G LTE, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and RJ45 Ethernet, with Bluetooth Low Energy used for installer configuration.

Protection and load management checks

PME fault detection is built in, so no separate earth electrode is required for that function. The protection set also includes over current protection, 6mA DC fault protection, lightning surge protection and over temperature protection. A dedicated 30mA Type A RCBO or equivalent protection is required at source, so final protective device selection still belongs in the installation design. Installers should also check supply capacity, cable route and isolation before committing to the charger position.

Dynamic load balancing is supported and the WallPod data sheet confirms that a CT clamp and cable are included. This is valuable on single-phase supplies where EV charging has to share the incoming capacity with the rest of the property. Static load management is software configurable, giving another way to restrict current where site capacity is constrained. Cable terminals are specified for single-phase connection, so the circuit design can be checked before the unit is installed.

Grey housing and outdoor installation

The WallPod enclosure measures 179mm wide, 367mm high and 142mm deep, giving it a compact wall footprint. The enclosure uses high impact resistant polycarbonate, has an IP65 enclosure rating and carries IK10 impact protection. The socket is rated IP54 and the operating temperature range is specified from -30°C to +50°C. Those details make the unit suitable for outdoor wall or post mounting when installed to the manufacturer instructions and local site conditions.

The grey finish suits rendered walls, garages, service areas and commercial exteriors where black may look too prominent and white may show dirt sooner. Colour does not change the output, connector, protection or communications package. ROLEC4140G is the grey 5m tethered variant. ROLEC4140W and ROLEC4140B provide the same 5m tethered format in white and black. Selection should be based on wall finish, customer preference and bay visibility, not on electrical performance.

Choosing between WallPod cable formats

ROLEC4140G is the grey WallPod with a 5m Type 2 tethered lead. ROLEC4140W and ROLEC4140B are the same 5m tethered format in white and black. The 10m tethered versions, ROLEC4145G, ROLEC4145W and ROLEC4145B, give extra reach where the chargepoint cannot sit close to the vehicle inlet. The socketed versions, ROLEC4020G, ROLEC4020W and ROLEC4020B, leave the cable choice to the user.

The buying difference across the WallPod Smart 7.4kW range is format and colour rather than charging output. All listed WallPod variants in this group provide up to 7.4kW from a single-phase supply. Choose 5m tethered for close repeat parking, 10m tethered for reach, and socketed for shared or changing cable requirements. For dual outlets, three-phase output or a heavier commercial casing, compare the WallPod with the wider Rolec range.

WallPod 5m tethered questions

Does ROLEC4140G include a cable?

Yes. This variant is supplied as a 5m Type 2 tethered WallPod charger. The tethered format means the lead stays with the chargepoint rather than being supplied separately by the driver.

Does the WallPod need an earth rod?

No. The WallPod Smart range includes PME fault detection with no earth electrode required for that function. The installation still needs correctly selected source protection and circuit design.

Is the grey version electrically different?

No. The grey ROLEC4140G version shares the same 7.4kW single-phase output and 5m Type 2 tethered format as the white and black 5m variants. The colour changes the finish, not the charging specification.
