The Rolec WallPod Smart 7.4kW Socketed EV Charger is a grey single-phase Mode 3 chargepoint with one Type 2 socket. ROLEC4020G is the grey socketed version in the WallPod Smart range, delivering up to 7.4kW at 32A from a 230V AC supply. It is intended for domestic and commercial installations that want a wall or post-mounted charger with cable flexibility. The Type 2 IEC 62196 socket lets the user connect a suitable charging cable rather than storing a fixed lead on the unit. Operation is available through plug and charge, mobile app or RFID, and OCPP 1.6J support allows integration with compatible back-office platforms. The charger includes PME fault detection, 6mA DC fault protection, integrated Class 1 MID compliant metering and an IP65 enclosure. Grey, white and black socketed variants are available within the same electrical format. View more home EV chargers.

Why choose a socketed WallPod

The socketed WallPod is useful where different drivers may use different Type 2 cable lengths. It keeps the chargepoint compact on the wall because no tethered lead has to be stored on the unit. A homeowner can use the cable supplied with the vehicle or a chosen Type 2 lead. A small business can install the unit without leaving a fixed cable exposed in the parking bay when no vehicle is connected.

The socketed format has a practical trade-off. Drivers need to have a cable available before every session. Where the same vehicle parks in the same position every day, a tethered WallPod may feel more immediate because the lead is already attached. Where the site values cable choice, a tidier wall appearance or shared use, the socketed grey variant is the more adaptable option. It is particularly useful for mixed vehicle households and small workplace bays where future vehicles may have different inlet positions.

Control methods and connected operation

WallPod Smart supports plug and charge, mobile app operation and RFID control. That lets the installer match operation to the customer’s preference. Plug and charge keeps a private installation simple. RFID offers controlled access where the charger is in a shared area or workplace. Mobile app use provides a digital route for starting and managing charge sessions.

The communications package includes 4G LTE with built-in nano SIM subject to subscription, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, RJ45 Ethernet, NFC and Bluetooth Low Energy for installer configuration. OCPP 1.6J support allows integration with a compatible back-office platform. That is useful when the charger is used beyond a private driveway, because site operators may need reporting, access control or management across multiple chargepoints. The configurable RGB LED status halo gives local status feedback at the charger.

Protection and metering for installers

PME fault detection is included, so no earth electrode or rod is required for that protection function. The protection data also lists overcurrent protection, 6mA DC fault protection, lightning surge protection and over temperature protection. Source protection is still required, and the data sheet states that a dedicated 30mA Type A RCBO or equivalent protection is required at source. That should be planned as part of the final circuit design.

Dynamic load balancing is supported, with CT clamp and cable included. That is valuable on single-phase domestic supplies and small commercial services where EV charging has to share capacity with other electrical loads. Static load management is software configurable, allowing a fixed current limit where needed. Integrated Class 1 MID compliant metering supports accurate consumption reporting, which helps with usage records for a home office, staff charging or a shared building.

Outdoor rating and grey finish

The WallPod Smart enclosure measures 179mm wide, 367mm high and 142mm deep, making it smaller on the wall than the Zura enclosure. The material is high impact resistant polycarbonate, and the finished unit is under 3kg to under 7kg depending on model. IP65 enclosure protection supports outdoor wall mounting, while the socket is rated IP54. Impact protection is IK10.

The grey finish is useful on rendered walls, blockwork, utility areas and commercial exteriors where black may look too heavy and white may show dirt sooner. ROLEC4020G is the grey socketed SKU. ROLEC4020W and ROLEC4020B provide the same socketed electrical arrangement in white and black. Colour choice does not change the 7.4kW single-phase rating, the Type 2 socket format or the smart control features. It should be selected around the building finish and customer preference.

Choosing between WallPod variants

ROLEC4020G, ROLEC4020W and ROLEC4020B are the grey, white and black socketed WallPod variants. ROLEC4140G, ROLEC4140W and ROLEC4140B change the format to a 5m Type 2 tethered lead. ROLEC4145G, ROLEC4145W and ROLEC4145B provide a 10m Type 2 tethered lead. All three WallPod formats provide up to 7.4kW from a single-phase supply, so the buying difference is colour and cable arrangement rather than charging output.

Choose socketed when users will bring their own Type 2 cable or where the wall unit should remain free of a fixed lead. Choose the 5m tethered variant when the vehicle parks close to the charger and a ready-to-use lead is preferred. Choose the 10m tethered model where the mounting point is further from the vehicle inlet. For sites needing dual outlets, three-phase charging or more custom fascia options, the Zura range should be considered alongside WallPod.

WallPod socketed questions

What colour is ROLEC4020G?

ROLEC4020G is the grey socketed WallPod Smart variant. White and black socketed versions are also listed in the range under separate SKUs.

Does the socketed WallPod need an earth rod?

No. The WallPod Smart data sheet lists PME fault detection with no earth electrode or rod required. Source protection and circuit design still need to be selected correctly for the installation.

What cable does the socketed unit use?

The charger has one Type 2 IEC 62196 charging socket. The user connects a suitable Type 2 charging cable, rather than using a fixed tethered lead.
