When surface mounting is the right option

That makes it relevant for retrofit commercial EV installations, workplace chargers and parking areas where disruption needs to be controlled.

EVCB0040 should be positioned from the real charger layout, not from a generic drawing. The installer should check charger door swing, socket or cable access, vehicle turning movement and pedestrian routes before marking the fixings. A surface mounted barrier can be easier to add than a root mounted version, but poor placement can still interfere with charger maintenance or daily use.

Using barriers on finished EV bays

Finished EV bays often have less flexibility than new-build layouts. The charger may already sit near a kerb, wall or traffic route, and the cable route may be fixed by the installed supply. A surface mounted protection barrier gives the designer a way to add separation without redesigning the whole bay, provided the surface and fixings are suitable for the final installation.

The barrier should be considered alongside the rest of the bay package. Signage helps drivers recognise the charging space, while barrier placement helps define the charger zone. Neither version changes the charger specification. The choice is made from site conditions, groundworks and fixing preference. A surface mounted barrier may be the faster route on a completed concrete or tarmac area, while root mounting may be preferable during new civils work.
