The Rolec Zura Smart 7.4kW 5m Tethered EV Charger is a black single-phase Mode 3 chargepoint with one fixed Type 2 lead. ROLEC3140B delivers up to 7.4kW from a 32A single-phase 230V AC supply and gives the driver a 5m tethered connection for repeat parking positions. It is best suited to driveways, residential bays and staff charging locations where the vehicle inlet can be reached without carrying a separate cable. The Zura platform adds mobile app, RFID and plug and charge operation, plus OCPP 1.6J connectivity for compatible back-office management. TruePEN PME fault detection is built in, and the single-phase model supports automatic dynamic load balancing with the CT clamp and cable included. The enclosure is IP65 rated, the design is IK10 impact resistant and the tethered variants include a Type 2 charge gun holster. Browse home EV chargers for comparable single-phase units.

Why a 5m tethered Zura suits repeat parking

A tethered charger works best where the same vehicle or parking bay is used regularly. The 5m Type 2 lead stays with the chargepoint, so the driver does not need to unpack a separate cable before every session. For front-drive installations, garage walls and allocated residential bays, that can make day-to-day use quicker than a socketed unit. The supplied holster gives the charge gun a fixed storage point and helps keep the parking area tidy between charges.

The 5m length should be selected when the charger can be mounted close to the vehicle inlet. It keeps excess cable to a minimum and is easier to store than a longer lead. It is not the right default for every bay. If the vehicle may be reversed or driven in nose-first on different days, or if the charger must sit away from the parking space, the 10m tethered Zura gives more reach. If multiple users and cable lengths are expected, the socketed Zura gives the most flexible connection format.

Control options for private and managed sites

Charging can be started through plug and charge, mobile app operation or RFID access. That range of control methods lets an installer set the product up for a private user, a small business or a managed communal location. Plug and charge keeps operation simple where access control is not needed. RFID gives a more controlled route for staff, residents or authorised users. Mobile app operation provides another layer of user control where the site wants digital management.

OCPP 1.6J support allows the charger to integrate with a compatible chargepoint management platform. That matters for sites that need usage records, controlled access or the ability to connect charging hardware into a wider public or private estate. Built-in Class 1 MID compliant metering supports accurate consumption reporting, which is valuable where energy needs to be attributed to a user, department or tenant. When used on commercial or shared sites, this makes the Zura more capable than a simple unmanaged tethered home charger.

Installer protection and load management

TruePEN PME fault detection removes the requirement for a separate earth electrode for PME fault detection, saving time on sites where a rod would add groundwork or visual clutter. The charger includes DC fault protection at 6mA, over current protection, surge protection and over temperature protection. The data sheet also requires a dedicated 30mA Type A RCBO or equivalent protection at source, so installers should plan protective devices alongside cable route, supply capacity and isolation.

Single-phase Zura units support automatic dynamic load balancing, and the CT clamp and cable are included for these models. That is useful where a 32A EV circuit has to share a domestic or small commercial incoming supply with other loads. Static load management is also software configurable, giving another way to set output limits where site capacity is constrained. Single-phase cable terminals are specified as 3 x 50mm for line, neutral and earth, allowing the electrical design to be checked before installation.

Outdoor mounting and connection layout

The enclosure measures 260mm wide, 410mm high and 157mm deep, giving the 5m tethered unit the same wall footprint as the socketed Zura. The body and fascia are made from high impact resistant polycarbonate, with a steel mounting back plate and stainless steel rear bracket plate. The black finish suits darker brickwork, commercial walls, post installations and parking areas where the charger should not dominate the elevation.

An IP65 enclosure rating supports outdoor siting, while IK10 impact protection is specified for the design. Operating temperature is listed from -30°C to +50°C, with operating humidity from 5% to 95%. The independent back plate supports wall or post mounting. For post installations, the Zura mounting post option fits up to two units and is specified to conform with PAS 1899 when used as required. Installers should also allow for the tethered lead sweep and holster position, since cable storage is part of the final user experience.

Choosing between 5m and 10m Zura leads

ROLEC3140B is the single 5m tethered version. ROLEC3150B keeps the 5m lead length but doubles the outlet count, giving two tethered leads on a 63A single-phase supply. ROLEC3145B is the single 10m tethered version, while ROLEC3155B gives two 10m tethered leads. The 5m model suits close mounting and predictable parking. The 10m model suits longer driveways, offset wall positions and bays where the inlet may sit further from the charger.

The socketed models cover a different need. ROLEC3020B gives one Type 2 socket and ROLEC3030B gives two sockets. Those variants leave cable choice to the user, which can be useful in shared environments. Three-phase variants provide up to 22kW where a 400V AC supply is available. For most single-phase homes and small business bays, the choice is between socketed flexibility, a tidy 5m tethered lead or a longer 10m reach.

Zura 5m tethered questions

Does ROLEC3140B include a cable holster?

Yes. The Zura data sheet states that the Type 2 charge gun holster is included with tethered units. That gives the 5m lead a defined storage point after charging.

Is the 5m tethered Zura single-phase?

Yes. This variant is specified as a single-phase unit with one Type 2 5m tethered lead. It provides up to 7.4kW at 32A from a 230V AC supply.

Can it be managed through OCPP?

Yes. The Zura technical data lists OCPP 1.6J support. That allows integration with a compatible chargepoint management system where site management is required.
